The Big Event with OU CousinsOn May 2, 2019 by Carley Grace
Saturday, April 13 was OU’s Big Event. An entire day dedicated to giving back to the community. People generally pick a club they are affiliated with and then go as a group to work on projects around the Norman community. I decided to go with OU cousins to volunteer a the Virtue Center. The Virtue Center is dedicated to providing help to those struggling with addiction whether it be drugs, smoking, alcohol, or even gambling. They provide individuals with group or solo therapy at an affordable rate, even without insurance. We got to the virtue center at around 10ish and divided up into smaller teams to tackle tasks that needed to be done around the building. One team tackled the bathrooms, another team took the carpets, some people did dusting, and I was a part of a group of six that painted a room. Only two of us had ever painted walls before, but since it is not too hard to figure out, most people got the hang of it. We got messy and I got paint all over my shoes (everyone else had decided it was safer to take theirs off). While we were waiting for the first layer of paint to dry, we ended up talking about a bunch of wild conspiracy theories and laughed with one of the study abroad students who just could not figure out how to say “vulnerable”. The paint job was rather rough that day and so was the weather, but I had a blast painting the walls (and maybe a little bit of the carpet) with OU cousins.
