International Event #1 Global Engagement DayOn May 8, 2019 by Carley Grace
Tuesday, April 9th was Global Engagement Day. I attended the first session from 9 am – 10 am titled “The Impacts and Benefits of International Education”. The session was led by a former and a current international student. International students provide 39 billion dollars to the national economy and provide 455,622 jobs nationally. On the state level, international students provide 260 million to the Oklahoma state economy, and they provide Oklahoma with around 3,000 jobs. International students are not able to compete with the nation’s citizens for jobs either. They can only work a limited amount of time per week and they can only work on campus. Since there are so many requirements needed to ensure an international student is authorized to study in another country, it creates a great number of jobs to make sure each step is completed.
International students may have a harder time paying for college, and it is not necessarily due to a lack of funds. It is harder for students to access their funds abroad, and getting a loan in another country is a nightmare. It is harder for them to find a willing cosigner and if they are unable to pay their school dues, they are forced to immediately leave the country. Fortunately, donation sites like gofundme are able to get some students the funds they need to continue their education.
It is not always easy being an international student. People treat you differently because they do not think they will understand you. Sometimes you are treated as a “token” friend or as a representation of an entire culture. Ultimately the experience of being an international student leads to huge emotional and mental growth.
